Burning Red

Burning Red

A Poem by Savannah B.

If you ask someone what color the sun is,
The correct answer is always yellow.
Everyone knows that.
Although I used to see it differently.
It burned bright red in my sky.
But the time I answered with what I saw,
I received only snickers from my peers and a sigh from my teacher.
This is why I always began to answer with "yellow."

It took some time to realize that the reason I always saw a red sun was because my world was on fire and I was the only one who could see the faded smoke spread throughout the sky.
I thought all the people who laughed at my red sun would wish theirs was red too if they could only see the way its reflected light danced in red-orange colors along the cool blue water of the ocean.

By the time the smoke cleared from my life,
I could finally see that beautiful foreign sun of yellow you all hold so dearly and so surely. It became true that the sun was in fact yellow.

But deep down inside, my soul will always miss the red.
