Under the Mask

Under the Mask

A Poem by Tara
"

Although make-up used to be a way for girls to enhance their already beautiful qualities, it's now used as a heavy mask. Make up is fine, but don't let it overshadow who you are.

"
Rejection has slapped her across the face,
disappointment lingers in her sinking heart.
Emotions of despair and regret begin to mix in her stomach,
and she can feel the tears ready to explode.
But wait.

She can't cry. She spent almost fifteen minutes
perfecting the cat eye.
Ten minutes applying the right amount of foundation
to cover the red, recently picked scars on her face.
And the mascara? She would look like a run over raccoon
waiting for it's timely death.

Tightening her glossed lips together,
she shuts her eyes and counts to ten.
Any method, to make her mask stay.

They can't see the mole on her chin,
that screams for attention.
The blackheads that seemed to be multiplying on her nose.
If she cried now, the whole world would see
the true person she was trying to conceal.

As people continued to pass by,
she marched through them,
praying she would make it through the day.

No one can know I don't look this way, she thought.
Boys won't like me, girls will gossip about me.
Who cares about feelings?
I'd rather fake it till I make it,
and later, I'll cry a lone in my room.

Her nose will be dripping, with gross forms of liquid.
Wet tissues will be scattered across the bed.
Holding in her problems all day was brutal,
but at least now she can let it all out,
her flaws and her face finally revealed.
