Say It Again, LouderA Story by AMetaphoricalSoulHe loves her in the silence. The excruciatingly painful silence. Is it shame? Embarrassment? Or is it uncertainty? Disbelief? In the long, cold, unknown distance she whispers in his ear. Her voice seems soft and reassuring. With the emotion in it as strong as the feeling itself. It throws him off. She is as unpredictable as a storm, flashing through the dark and silent light. His mind races. The words left unsaid hang in the air. He wants to understand. He wants to know everything. The greed for knowledge is unbearable. She speaks again in an attempt to soften his mind. It takes time, but it works. Does that mean he is gullible or trusting? Maybe both. He speaks her name softly only to be replied to with complete silence. He says it again, slightly louder. This time the answer is a long sigh of annoyance. Yet again, those three words are left unsaid. They sit in silence for years. His mind wanders and his memories torture him. The guilt sets in and he hates himself. The walls close in on him and the tears start to pour silently. He apologizes for everything with as much sincerity as ever. His voice cracks and he knows he's lost it. Everything from then on happens as it always does. He is nothing but a fool and he knows it. He laughs. This is how it is everyday of his sad life. He laughs hysterically. He then calms down and smiles sincerely. What a great girl! Everything he could ask for and more. Funny. Smart. Beautiful. But mostly, realistic. She knows how life works better than he knows the back of his hand. He agrees with everything she says and believes all of it. She is a goddess who can do no wrong. He loves her more than anything. “Thank you,” he says.
