A Proper Effort

A Proper Effort

A Poem by AMetaphoricalSoul

I despise pursuit
The game of the chase
I am the mouse hunting the fox
Food for the slaughter
Stalking my own demise
I am prepared to concede
Abandon this fruitless crusade
Let me be the courted
Endeavour to gain my favour
Show me you are worthy of my interest
I have done enough to convey my intentions
I am finished with my attempts to charm you
It is my turn to be convinced
Make me seem exceptional
I want to see it in your eyes
And hear it in your voice
Seduce me to your character
Impress me with your determination to win me over
I have constantly aspired to please
Sacrificing my own desires to accommodate for the sake of others
Lowering my standards to measure up to those I covet
But all I crave now is my own contentment
And it comes from within me
You have my permission to compliment my life
But you will not ever command my spirit
Nevermore will I alter my nature to appease the whims of a potential prospect
I know now that I deserve greater than I have received
I have earned a proper effort
I will settle for nothing less than one befitting of my virtue
