Remorse

Remorse

A Poem by Sheriah Mozelle

REMORSE

The path I walk along is desolate and worn,

No other soul has accompanied it on its journey in quite some time,

The bristled plants and charred limbs of long dead trees are its only company,

The woods surrounding me deafen my ears with their silence,

The only living soul is mine,

I journey to a faraway place that has been left untouched by cruelness,

Where the rivers and creeks bubble and sway around rocks,

Unlike here,

Where there is no water,

Only dry beds that once gave life at every moment possible,

And now only give death with their poisonous tricks,

I see the destruction around me,

And yet I cannot feel remorse,

I walk this path that is worn and beaten,

I listen to the deafening silence,

Though I can almost hear the agonizing screams of what once was,

I begin to wonder if it will ever be again,

And as I reach my destination,

I can see the smoke swirling above,

Choking me along this path,

The flames so high and burning so hot,

I realize that there is no end to this destruction,

This is when I shed my first tear,

And witness my first feeling,

Remorse.
