Twins of the SkyA Poem by Sarah SopherTwins of
the Sky Dedicated to my father and to the 2,977
How
fast the blue September sky Would
ring with shrieks and somber cries The
tenth night fell on the twins of the sky But
with the eleventh dawn would come their demise And
the steel clad sisters were doomed to fall From
their perch in the sky, high above all And
no fortune deterred the oncoming doom From
the giants of green hard at work in their rooms A metal
bird flew through the air Piloted
into a sister with care First,
just one of the twins was ablaze But
amid chaos a second bird flew through the haze Now,
both sisters billowed smoke The
air rang with sirens, nobody spoke In
the heart of the twins, the flames only grew No
one was ready, nor knew what to do An
exodus began leaving town The
sky was grey, papers flitted down The
mayor, police, doctors arrived Firemen,
too, stood by their side Speaking
to others by using their eyes For,
no one could speak despite stunted tries And
through these discussions, everyone knew It
might be the last time they’d lay eyes on their crew The
imminent danger was to everyone clear Yet
no one possessed any semblance of fear An
unspoken duty bound everyone their No one
would leave, not for family, nor care The
white collar men bustled about While
firemen rushed up, not out With
grim reality sinking in They
all marched on, amid the din There
was noise but no one knew As
the world played in slow-mo to a horrible tune Not
long after the march began Did
the men know they’d done all anyone can And
a scream of protest escaped each twin As the
great steel frame failed from within And
the steel grew hotter and hotter still But
the twins of the sky had strength and will But
there was nothing to stop them now As
the steel buckled with a horrible sound And
then there was nothing but blackness and screams As
they fell from their thrones in a city of dreams On
that ill fated day the nation was hurt As
the twins of the sky were doomed by a bird And
in the horizon, now there is a gap Where
two sisters once stood watch o'er the map But
they are no more; a thing of the past A
wound that is healed by time going fast Though
nothing can ever truly mend The
mothers and fathers and families and friends So
still we remember the way things once were When
the twins of the sky stood watch over her © 2013 Sarah SopherReviews
