A water-based ink can be defined as an ink, which contains either pigment or dyes in a colloidal suspension with water as solvent. Although the main solvent utilized in the process of production of water-based inks is water, the inks may contain other co-solvents to decrease the time and heat necessary to cure ink film on fabric. Water-based inks are more viscosity stable on press as water evaporates slowly. Flow behavior, color, good surface appearance, gloss, and performance are the main factors which influence growth of the water-based inks market. New generation water-based products are easier to clean as compared to solvent counterparts and have lower flammability ratings.

Comprehensive Competitive Analysis And Profiles Of Major Market Players Provided In The Report Are DIC Corporation, Dow Corning Corporation, Evonik Industries AG, Flint Group, Huber Group, Sakata Inx, Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA, T & K Toka Co., Ltd., The Sherwin-Williams Company, Toyo Ink SC Holdings Co., Ltd.

Growth in flexible packaging, rise in demand for printing inks, and increase in environment & safety issues are major factors that drive the growth for water-based inks market. Use of water-based inks reduces amount of hazardous waste. Asia-Pacific is expected to register substantial growth due to increase in demand for environment friendly inks in emerging economies such as China and India. Slow drying & printing speed is the main disadvantage of these inks.
Use of water-based inks is restricted around highly alkaline environments as these inks are soluble in alkaline solutions. Moreover, these inks cannot wet & print smoothly on difficult substrates due to high surface energy of water component. The above mentioned factors restrict the growth of the water-based inks market. However, continuous product innovation such as development of pH stable inks and enhancement in resins utilized in ink formulation provide potential growth opportunities for market expansion.

The report segments the water-based inks market on the basis of resin type, printing process, application, and geography. Based on resin type, the market is divided into acrylic, maleic, and shellac. On the basis of printing process, it is classified into offset, flexography, gravure, inkjet, letterpress, and others. Others include screen and electron beam. On the basis of application, the market is categorized into corrugated cardboards, flexible packaging, tags & labels, and folding cartons. By geography, it is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.

The major players operating in the global market focus on key market strategies such as product launch, mergers, acquisition, and expansion to strengthen their market reach to maintain their position in the competitive market. In July 2017, Flint Group launched PremoNava series of water-based inks for paper & board applications to meet the increase in customers demand in Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
