Fear and HorrorA Poem by Ron HoganA sad poem (with heroic quatrains).
With laughter full, a playing child he was.
Alas, at night, comes time to lay his head; The fears he grips as any child he does-- Averts his eyes from closet or 'neath bed. Fear and horror lie beyond the darkness. A teenage boy whose own he feels he holds; Abandoned house, he's dared to sneak inside: With stepping in, his honor he upholds-- No light, he wonders: what in shadows hides? Fear and horror lie beyond the darkness. A full grown man, he sets out on his own. Accosting fate, he leaves home far away. Now anxious, what does future hold alone? Adventure, hoping he; does love await? Fear and horror lie beyond the darkness. Piano plays, and enters his new bride. A woman full of splendor; tragic, this-- The cold wind blows; beneath the earth, she hides. The distance he looks to: her love, he'll miss. Fear and horror lie beyond the darkness. A life of sadness from a blasted heart; A love that's lost, he must no longer feel. He whispers a decision to depart-- From steely mouth protrudes a weapon's steel. Fear and horror lie beyond the darkness. © 2009 Ron HoganReviews
