AltercationA Poem by Ron HoganA villanelle in iambic pentameter.
A cigarette in hand, my heart sinks low.
An altercation now has taken flight: Now, round and round in circles, off we go. Of heart's desire, little do I know. No more do I, in sorrow, wish to fight. A cigarette in hand, my heart sinks low. As things get hot, we watch our voices grow. With alcohol, I drown myself tonight-- Now round and round in circles, off we go. I hold my heart, my feelings never show. It's now become a cold and lonely night; A cigarette in hand, my heart sinks low. We plead each other--tell each other, "No." We wonder when we will resolve this fight. Now, round and round in circles, off we go. So, have we quelled our hearts? I do not know. An altercation ceased for one more night. A cigarette in hand, my heart sinks low: Now, round and round in circles, off we go. © 2009 Ron HoganAuthor's Note
