Jake & Jules get ready to go out.

‘I’m so used to having the market and the mall within walking distance.’ Julia said. ‘I’ve never needed a car before.’
‘We’ll go out tomorrow. I’ll pick you up, but you should buy a car, or ask Slater for one.’
‘He’s done enough for me, and it would be stupid for me to buy a car when I’m moving into my apartment as soon as this blows over,’ she blew her hair out of her eyes.
‘So, all you want is ingredients?’
‘No, we should go shopping and make a day of it. Stop by Vincente’s Salon.’
‘I could use a color touch up.’
‘Your natural hair color is so beautiful, Carl. I don’t know why you dye it.’
‘Vanity,’ she replied. ‘It’s brown, mousy, plain, common brown. Blondes have more fun, you know.’
‘Not that you don’t look fabulous as a blonde.’
‘I’m thinking of trying red out. Vibrant red, something insanely dramatic.’
‘You’re both insane and dramatic, so I suppose that’d work.’ She smiled as Carl barked out a rich laugh. ‘I’m sure it’ll suit you, though. Green would suit you.’
‘It’s not easy being green,’ Carl quipped, and Julia groaned, just as she heard Jake opened the door, call her name. ‘Sounds like someone is home. I’ll see you tomorrow. Julia?’
            ‘What?’
‘Jump him for me, would you?’
‘You’re really terrible, you know that? See you tomorrow.’
            ‘Bye.’
She hung up the phone, grinning.
            ‘Julia?’
‘I’m in here. I was talking to Carla. She works on the Proud and the Predatory.’
‘Not one of mine,’ he replied. ‘Sorry for interrupting your call.’
‘No, you didn’t. We’re going out tomorrow. I’ll finally follow through on that promise to cook for you.’ She stood, brushed her hair behind one ear, ‘So, Chinese tonight?’
            ‘French, I think.’
‘I don’t think French restaurants usually deliver. And it’s usually the ambience that you pay for, isn’t it?’
‘Well, let’s pay for the ambience. It’d be nice and public. Dispel any doubts that we’re involved in the divasdude’s eyes.’
Her eyes fixed on his face, noticed how he seemed to be glowing from the inside. Handsome and golden in his usual way, but he seemed elated, as well. ‘You want to go to a fancy restaurant to tell divasdude94 that we’re involved?’ She cocked and eyebrow, watching a grin break free.
‘We just got Golf TV. I just got Golf TV. I bluffed like crazy, but this – this is huge. It’s a giant new market.’ He stepped forward, lifted her by the waist with a dizzying kind of ease. Her laugh bubbled out. ‘We’re celebrating.’
‘Congratulations.’ He seemed as happy as a boy with a new toy, his single dimple winking, his silver eyes dancing. ‘I wouldn’t think that you’d still get this excited after all this time.’
She ignored the tug of disappointment as he set her down. ‘Neither would I. It’s only made better by the fact that Horton, Golf TV’s owner, was fighting it. Kind of guy that stays on the ship as it sinks, even as he’s offered a fix to the leak.’
            ‘You won.’
‘I like to win. When I want something, I don’t stop until I get it.’ They realized, at the same time, that his hands were still on her waist. He met her eyes as his smile faded.
No. She shuddered out a breath. She would not go in that direction. The step backwards was both physical and mental.
He took his hands back. ‘So, is somewhere French and fancy OK?’
‘Surprise me,’ she replied sunnily, taking a few more steps backwards. ‘I’m just going to shower, get changed.’
He nodded. ‘I’ll do the same.’
