idealism

idealism

A Poem by Daisy Ackerman

we spend our lives with eyes on the clock

always waiting while uninsured minutes

slip through the gaps between our fingers

like sand. but listen, children!

take your opportunities now to live

to sing to write to fall in love to do everything

before the weight of the world

falls down on you, listen! the future lays

before you like a flowering valley

and you are at a clifftop overlooking it, just

open your eyes and see it spreading beneath you!

open your arms and let the sunlight warm

your face and run out into the world with open arms, listen!

the present was once the future

and the future is never the present

stop waiting for a tomorrow

that may never come to pass!
