Should Have

Should Have

A Poem by Laura Sparkle

I should have warned you when we met

That I do get out of control sometimes,

I bite and I yell and I run when I’m scared

I cannot seem to sit in one place for too long.

I should have told you that I really am fun,

When I’m cold and alone in the dark,

When I’m stuck and harassed by the thoughts,

By distant memories of a world I once wished for.

I should have showed you that I kiss quite well,

And my hugs are warm when I’m feeling playful,

When I need to smile and love you

All the moments lost in a blink of an eye.

I should have taught you everything,

But you learned anyway all by yourself,

My “great tasting neck” and my stubborn embrace,

You learned everything I did not teach

And for that, I thank you, my dear.
