Adoration

Adoration

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

There is something beautiful in the way
that you squeeze your honey-brown eyes shut
and grin big enough to show your gums
before you lean forward and throw your head back
and cackle loud enough to wake the neighbors

Sometimes instead of laughing with you
I just watch with a dopey smile
as your body wracks and your shoulders shake
and I can feel my gray-blue eyes soften
into something I've rarely experienced:

adoration
