Slowly, All At Once

Slowly, All At Once

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

I fell in love with you slowly
fell in love with the way that your hand comes up to cover your mouth when your laugh is too ugly
fell in love with how fast your short hair grew long enough to tickle your shoulders
fell in love with the look of concentration on your face as you gave yourself an insulin shot
fell in love with how I can almost hear your blush on your cheeks when you get flustered
fell in love with the endearing way that your curvy, short legs waddle as you walk
fell in love with how your small chubby hands fidget in your lap
fell in love with how smooth your knuckles felt when I grabbed them
fell in love with how you'd eventually pull away and amusingly admit that your palms were getting sweaty
I fell in love with you slowly
fell in love with how everything began to remind me of you
and the banality of it all amused even me
I could see a moldy orange and still think of your face
and I fell in love with you slowly
and then all in one go
