"Big-Boned"

"Big-Boned"

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

Please stop saying
that my extra weight
is just poor willpower

If you think that
shoveling food past my lips
is a choice
then you're very wrong

I know that eating disorders
have their limitations,
but so do people

If my collar bones weren't balancing
mental illness as well,
perhaps I could conquer it

But I am not some
battery of sempiternal energy,
I cannot just recharge
at the drop of a hat

So please stop saying
that my extra weight
is just poor willpower

.

Do not give understanding
for one side
of the weight disorder spectrum
and not for the other
