Ear Muffs

Ear Muffs

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

I want to wrap
my arms around your torso,
and squeeze your innards
close together
to make you feel warm.

Because I know
what you're feeling
all too well,
and I do not mean that
in some holier-than-thou way.

Funeral organs are loud,

casket lids are loud,

death is loud.

And I want to reach up
to cover your reddened ears
with my palms,
so that you don't have to hear
any of it at all.
