Redundancy

Redundancy

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

It is unimaginable to cry
over meager things,
once someone stops living
Every small little thing
that you teared up over
before someone's passing
becomes entirely insignificant
You forget the sadness
that you felt,
while the veterinarian
euthanized your pet
For god's sake,
you feel animalistic
for forgetting to mourn
your own dog
But crying over
someone who has died,
simply becomes redundant,
so you stop.
You start to yield
to the indifference,
and the numbness
of your shaken branches
You wring yourself out,
until you don't think
your eyes could ever be damp again
