Earthworms

Earthworms

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

You are the smell of the earth before rain,
you are the earthworms that crawl,
out of the damp soil,
and take refuge in the streets,
you are the children standing on the curb,
with bare feet and wet toes,
dancing in the running water,
you are drops skirting down the east window.

You are me,
and no matter how many,
different medications I take,
I will always be desperately trying,
to find a break in these rain clouds,
in order to see the sun again.

The sun may change names,
but I will always find one of them,
and they will make my medication taste better,
and they will make it feel,
like it's actually doing something to help.

I'm constantly going up and down,
and my mood moves with me,
but there will always be a sun,
to make the earthworms,
crawl back into the soil,
where they belong.
