Hard Candy

Hard Candy

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

You are the sound of hard candy,
clicking against the backs,
of childrens' teeth,
you are the call,
of August cicadas,
you are the repetitive pressing,
of a keyboard backspace key.

You are the impatient sigh,
that originates from the chest,
but comes out through the mouth,
you are the sound of hands rummaging,
through the utensil drawer,
you are the whipping of lake water,
slapping the outer edges of the sandbars,
early in the morning.

You aren't necessary to me,
you merely and simply exist,
but when I hear your slow footsteps,
I choose to listen.
