Neverlasting

Neverlasting

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

It seems like every thing that I encounter is simply fleeting.

Like one step will make the floor creak and I'll be discovered,

and just like the sound that gravel makes underneath the soles of your shoes,
all the while alerting anything in the surrounding area that,
hey,
a human.

Shrivel up, canter away, curl up under the shade.

Everything is neverlasting,

moment-lasting,

too entirely fleeting,
everything is transient,
ephemeral and momentary,
completely temporary.

How long until this thick-skulled human,
realizes that nothing lasts,
and that to me it is truly terrifying,
alarming and disheartening,

utterly hair-raising and hell-raising,

and how long until I realize,
that I am the forest dweller,
that scampers away at the sound of human footsteps?

Scared isn't the right word,

but it's the first word that comes to mind.
