One Zillion Gallons

One Zillion Gallons

A Poem by Emmy J.M. Powell

I’m the biography,
that you always opened,
but never paged through,
because you skipped,
to the index,
so you could scope out,
the chapters of me,
that you wanted to learn,
and sometimes you stare,
at the black on white,
and see a picture instead.

Whenever you smile,
I clench my jaw,
until it’s painful,
and my teeth crumble,
so when we fight,
I must bite with sharp edges,
and dig into you,
like a shovel in soft earth,
with shards of my teeth,
that your happiness,
made me break.

When I told you,
that I loved you,
and you didn’t say it back,
and instead you put up,
these boundaries,
and the gates only open,
when you’re teasing me,
and so sometimes,
I try to roam outside,
of those walls,
and come crawling back,
on all fours.

I watch you,
and sometimes when,
you speak you have,
blood on your lips,
staining them with,
my unrequited love,
and I would go through,
gallons and gallons and gallons,
of the stuff just to be able,
to kiss your cracked lips,
for the first time.

'When I told you, - These boundaries,' those are good lines. Gosh I wish I was allowed to plagiarise sometimes.

Aw, thank you, that's kind of you to say!
This was one of the most beautiful poems I have encountered in a long while. Every single stanza was drenched in linguistic longing and written beauty. I usually try to pick a favorite line or stanza to quote and congratulate when I do reviews, but it is impossible for me to do so when reviewing this particular work because every single line and every single stanza are absolutely fantastic.

I'm stunned by your abilities. Congrats on your loads of talent.
