How California Resonates

How California Resonates

A Poem by Nicole

It’s like a sick feeling stuck in my gut

I see the corner store at the intersection of Napa and Berryessa

Bricks crashing around the edges of my teeth

across the grooves of my tongue

You tell me it’s the best.

I will swallow down the red and think about

"Keep Tahoe Blue" bumper stickers

warm shoulders in the persistent sunlight

gnarled trees climbing from the soil,

lining the roads with shadowy fruits

wicker picnic baskets against the sand

the howling wind and waves caught in my hair

salt skimming my skin from the ocean breath.

It’s like a place

so much better than this.

You use words well. You counterbalance thoughts in your writing, maintain logical progression and still manage to add a bit of mystery and intrigue to the piece. I loved the bumper sticker line. It made me wonder if the main character was a Nevada native. I liked this very much.

Loved the powerful imagery, words with such intricate forms and visual impressions. A misty feeling... I was born in Nor Cal, so it still resonates in me... Thanks for this write!
