On hard ground falls virgin rain

Clinging muck holding fast

surges over shoe top as its drain

stain of the past

Muddy shoes dirt on clean floor

pieces of yesterday's work soil the polish

Swept trail of broken clay impossible to ignore

What entered lining of sole one can not abolish

Very interesting piece... and I somewhat agree with Ern.... it's up to the reader to decide the real ending.... one could be that you get scolded for bring in this wet clay like substance in the house....another could be that your indelible footprint will remain on this substance forever...be it a new sidewalk, or some other project...so in fact you could be infamous with this one giant step!

this is an interesting piece - here we have an extreme closeup of a pair of muddy shoes, it's journey through a rainy day. who wears them and what consequence do they face for dirtying a clean floor is untold. the reader has to fill in the gaps. and for me: i've been watching a lot of war footage from ukraine, and i can only think of the soldiers in the trenches. maybe one has returned home and forgot about hygeine or cleanliness. that is my train of thoughts today. if you are willing to talk about the inspiration behind this work, i'd be much obliged.

Thank you so much my friend you are on the right track and just need to follow those footsteps a bit further. In entering my house the other day I noticed pieces of dried mud that had fallen from the bottom of my boots so I removed them. I had soiled my swept floor and now it must be cleaned again. With some effort how easy it was to take the broom and sweep away the exterior dirt that had soiled my previously clean floor, Then observing inside the boots where mud had entered I saw stains that I would not be able to remove and I though how like a person where some of our mud falls off soiling what others can see and this is with effort able to be removed but what soils us inside (I played with the homophone sole, soul) can not so easily be cleaned
