Halloween

Halloween

A Poem by Soren

It is the season which is the reason this tale I'll tell
Was a night full of fright I remember well
For fun kids did come on the run, looking for candy's spell
Skinny and small fat and tall, each in a costume shell
A jack-o-lantern lit, flames did spit, from the dark appeared a tiny child
Alone, with no one grown, timidly held out a crippled hand so mild
Asked where was his mother or brother he just stood quiet and smiled
Then turned his back disappeared into black with his sack of candy piled
The next group was a family troop that knocked on the door
The kids were glad but the mother looked sad, so I asked her what for
She said her youngest had died, then she cried, he had been only four
Of his hand maimed he was ashamed but sweets and Halloween he did adore

Hauntingly beautiful, this left me with wet eyes and goose bumps ...

I couldn't quite find the rhythm for a few of the lines, but otherwise found very well-crafted, and a true Halloween tale.

Thank you so much for the read and kind words of comment they are most appreciated
The sad story of a visit from Trick 'R Treaters on Hallowe'en is very finely inked in this seasonal write. My heart sank for the sad Mammy who had buried her youngest son at only age 4, who loved Hallowe'en and treats and calling door to door. I pray there is Hallowe'en in Heaven for all the little children to enjoy, bless all. Thank you for sharing this poignant poem, dear Soren. I hope those who read it will be a little more kind to those who come knocking on this very special evening when 'the veil' between our world and the world of Spirit is at its thinnest. Sadly, not everybody here opens their doors to the children. Thank you again for sharing, my friend... Lovely work...

As I read, I heard this in a deep, sonorous voice. Very chilling. Made me think of Edgar Allan Poe, only in a modern setting (which is so difficult to do).
