A nation drugged

A nation drugged

A Poem by Soren

Chemicals in our water,  pollution in our air,
Preservatives in our food, an over the counter pharmaceutical fair
Coloring things we eat, microplastics in all
Calming ourselves in traffic by drinking alcohol
For what's leached out of our food, supplements we take
Strung out on street drugs, some never awake
Stimulants in cigarettes, so we won't burn up in bed
The news that works us up over travesties said
Social media to stir the coals and set ablaze the fire
Religion telling us what we can and can't desire
Political correctness, violence, bread of our daily diet
Video games, TV, internet, hypnotized in electronic quiet
Look at the poor, bloody war, trash littered shore
Drugged in a stupor feeling super, no one cares anymore

So many things: religion, political correctness. Perhaps those of us who recognise these things defeat them. At least we know them and aren't dragged beneath the water by them. I have no belief, but belief can be valuable for many - provided they don't tell you how you should believe. So, an interesting poem.

Thanks so much Tumi for the read and most supportive kind words. They are most appreciated.
I agree Soren. I have conversations with the old people. The young ones are lost in foolishness. Powerful and honest words shared my friend. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

I was thinking. Why we all are born...Is it to eat micro plastic, inhale poison or to drink chemicals....eye opening poem. This poem should reach every one's hand in this world I feel. Powerful work

A very poignant write from your poetic pen, Soren. You highlight everything in our human world which is negative, superbly. It's the very sad reality of life as we live it today. We've become so used to hearing and seeing this bad news for so long, I think only the sensitive souls are now aware and the rest are immune to it all. Superb penning, showing us that we all need to take another look at our world and realise just what is happening in it. Thank you for writing this wonderful "Wake-up" poem, Soren. A poem we all need to read...

Most welcome always, dear friend...
I care....and i had a best friend who died in a fire...they are pretty sure she fell asleep smoking a cigarette and started the couch on fire.
I care...and the poet who wrote this poem cares.

Thanks Jacob I appreciate the read and support. Another of my rants that I just had to get out.
it's a harsh reality, isn't it, Soren. the inadvertent ingested plastic stands out for me ... it's a shocking fact and the amount even more so... the other truth that stands out for me is the plastic "religious' people in all the churches .. having the ability to truly love each other only comes from knowing and accepting our loving Creator through Jesus Christ .. that may sound trite and prideful and I can only speak from my own personal acceptance .. we are weak and helpless really .. civilization has had millenniums to "get it right" and we fail time after time ... yet it's what everyone but the most dark of soul wants and needs ... every line of your poem sparks a conversation ... but those two especially are vivid to me ... i like the bits of rhyming as well .. i think it lends strength to your brutally honest prose .. thanks for sharing .. it can be such a frustrating and discouraging world at times
