Trapped

Trapped

A Poem by Soren

Trap's links held by stone

to the bottom of a lake chained

Teeth of steel tear flesh crush bone

leg chewed off so not to be brained

A loss a gain

coat with an attitude

Three legs did retain

a creature with gratitude

Author's Note

Soren
In my youth I trapped muskrats. The jaws of the trap would clamp down on their leg but if the traps were not checked quickly they would chew their leg off and get away. If caught above ground they would have to be clubbed on the head so as not to spoil the fur. Because of this we would set traps below water so they would drown before they could chew their leg off. Since then I have stopped all trapping and even fishing.
