Mockingbird

Mockingbird

A Poem by Soren

I've listened to larks and warblers

Each with its own song

envied the plumage of peacocks and tanagers

with colors so vibrant and strong

Crows as thieves, nature did ordain

to take anything shiny or about strewn

But the mockingbird with feathers so plain

steals no grain, only a tune

So out of this mirror of sound

from poets I covet, I steal a word

Then with this, purloined bound

I am a mockingbird

I like the playfulness expressed with the attachment of bird to poet.

Thanks Winston I appreciate the review and kind words.
I am instantly attracted to the title of the poem. And so truly, your take on the Mockingbird is so beautiful! A plain jane with such an unexpected charm. Loved the picture you paint and also the very enjoyable mentions of the other birds. This is such a special poem, indeed and its so good to return just so I can read your poetry!

Thank you Divya so glad you are back. I missed your verse and so appreciate your review and kind wor.. read more
influence from other poets...favorite words purloined...
"Hey everybody, have you heard?"
And I think we inadvertantly do steal from others...something we read resting in our head and then...
one day it is incorporated into our own writing...
I remember in Finding Forrester, William saying "I gave him some of my own words and then he started typing his...."
it's a way of writers...the influence shines.

Thanks Ken your review and kind words are appreciated.
Cleverly phrased, thoughts, imagination and knowledge so finely used, Soren. Final stanza, more than fine! 'Mirror of sound', oh yes!

'So out of this mirror of sound
from poets I covet, I steal a word
Then with this, purloined bound
I am a mockingbird'
