A Poem by Soren

Do you think a sparrow feels no cold?

Do you think a pig feels no pain?

Does a swan feel loss if it's mate is sold?

Does a bull feel imprisoned with a chain?

Do you think a bug feels no fear?

Will a dog die for his master?

Can an elephant shed a tear?

Can birds sense a pending disaster?

Why does man think only he has a soul,

that he has a monopoly on being superior?

Why is it that his only goal

is to make himself God and everything else inferior?

I can scientifically answer some of these. I can heartfelt answer others from experience and my wishes answer the rest. In short the final answer is I agree. And I answer as a lifelong natualist, dog and cat owner. Some time falconer, Horse rider and sometime farmer. Also my day job as a professional artist also says a profound yes animals do have a soul. And yes is inordinantly arrogant to think otherwise.
Or perhaps I am just an unretrievable romantic. One thing I know for sure I would rather have animals than most humans.

Animals have an essence, a soul absolutely and as much a right to live and thrive on this planet as does mankind. Ask anyone who owns a pet. They'll agree, their pet is a son, daughter, friend and parent to them. In fact, those people who don't think animals are any less than this are soulless and will not have an entry into the kingdom of heaven. They are condemned souls. I know there is a world most divine waiting for every pure and selfless creature of God who crosses that rainbow bridge. I cannot say the same for man. So beautifully written, dear Soren.

Good point.... I think many of us consider ourselves to be superior to creature of nature, but I also think that many of us believe that these creatures have a ticking heart, a soul, a brain that can think a defense system to ward off those who threaten.....dogs and cats for instance are very smart and can be trained to do many things that humans do...and if we remember the apes from long ago, they were pretty smart... so I believe that animals think, and have feelings just like humans...birds have a good sense of disaster; God should have made everyone equal, but that didn't happen.... but we should still believe that man is not necessarily superior.... we can talk to many mammals, and other creatures....

As I get older I find that I am learning more and more about other species sharing this planet with us. We have totally underestimated the capacity of animals and birds to have emotion. I have cried time and time again recently watching reels of heartbreaking separations and deaths leaving behind distraught animals. Scenes with elephants, dogs, baby apes, deer which need to be shown and not hidden away. I am amazed by the animal kingdom and I am delighted that you have highlighted what I have been thinking for sometime. We are far from the superior race. Thank you Soren.
