Headstone

Headstone

A Poem by Soren

I lie with no thoughts, a lump of stone,

dead, unfeeling, cold, heavy and hard

I stand alone, abandoned, blind, and deaf

Broken from my primal bed,

a rough and battered, splintered, shard,

scattered, shattered, bits of what I once was

Dark, stranger to light, I do not sparkle, or shine,

dull as charcoal even in the bright sun

I cast a shadow that leaves no mark

All flaws exposed, mixed with millions of others,

I repose in the dust from which I've come

It is my belief that the stone remains cool to the human touch no matter the temperature of the day. Our own shadow increasing in size, accounting for the parade of years, for the intervals of time we visit. Quite an absorbing read, Soren. Even when read over and over again.

Definitely can relate to this Soren. Interesting take on its "cold" proclivities. Quite opposite of the warm accolades shared between bereaved family members. It feels like it will last forever, yet that is only true according to how long the cemetery has a caregiver and people who care to visit. Sad even more to those abandoned graveyards and those lost in mass graves... thought provoking

Thank you Brad for the review and comments.
Nothing is tangible but a headstone. Lifelessness. Such a dramatic vivid emptiness this portrays. Makes one think for sure. Written skillfully.

A broken headstone removed from a its grave. That is how I read this piece Soren. Disconnected and discarded. I felt a shiver. I read a couple of times aa I was unsure whether I was on the right track.

Deems remorse - all grief, could be the headstone.. or alternatively a being without emotion, indifferent to other's feelings. However the interpretation is painful, confusing, incurable Dramatic,, finely written words, Soren - you know how to move a reviewer's thoughts.

Thank you dear poet for your review and most insightful comments.
Wow, this could be every mortal man lying stone cold and dead in the earth from which he came out. Between two eternities, in the interim called life, he remained lost, broken and utterly flawed and thus hopeless, he returned to the dust. A stunning poem! Loved it!

as the lonely headstone speaks, longing for the place in the earth it was removed from against its will, now a remembrance of someone it didn't even know. I like how this reads Soren
