When Jannis sang the blues

When Jannis sang the blues

A Poem by Soren

Dismayed by segregation in school

She stood up for what she thought was right

Was bullied and called a fool

For taking the part of blacks and their fight

Inspired by Bessy Smith, Thornton and Leadbelly

I want to be the first white black person” she said

In college, voted the man most ugly

This scar she would carry until she was dead

To be loved was all that she wanted

She sought some southern comfort in whiskey

Her music, a generation haunted

Her drug behavior all too risky

The first female rock star she broke many taboos

She died with the music that took others to heaven

Far to early she was buried in the blues

Died becoming a founding member of the club 27

I personally have never cared for her or her music, but I can appreciate her place in music history. She used to date Kris Kristofferson, so the joke is on those who voted her the "most ugly man." LOL! It's a shame that she fell into that category of rock stars who died at the age of 27. Drugs be damned!

Love her music and her style; she was a hero for many people because she stood up for those who needed her voice... unfortunately, she died young but definitely set the course for many to follow. Nicely done; thanks for sharing.

A wonderful tribute to such a soulful singer of any musical era. Her music and legacy speaks for itself. A powerhouse of a singer and unshakable force of empowerment as well. Even to this day her voice is undeniable and truly all Janis Lyn Joplin.

When she sang rock my generation listened. She turned those taunts to her advantage and we marvelled at the sound of her song. Sadly other demons took her. A fine tribute Soren to a founding member of the 27 club. A gutsy piece of posted artwork to accompany your words remind us she is not forgotten along with our own Amy Winehouse. Such talent.
