The idea that a pill can fix you when ill

Is just part of tradition

Today, few are a fan of a medicine man

It's considered superstition

Not long ago, bloodletting was the way to go

A pseudoscientific rendition

Today, drug companies or a physician, take the position

That medicine is the only decision

We must rely on the chemicals they supply

Which treat only symptoms not your condition

Although antidepressants, we know, are no better than a placebo

They are still advertised on television

Side effects could be obesity or impotency

To criticize them is called sedition

They can leave you zombified with no desire inside

With little emotion or ambition

What is worse, is the pharmaceutical curse

They can leave you with an addiction

Millions of years of evolution has given us the solution

The body is its own best physician

I respect what you have to say. I may not fully agree with it, but respect it none the less. Advancements in medical science has come a long way. From the times where people suffered and died of polio we have nearly eradicated it. This among a plethora of diseases where we have either cured, nearly cured, or alleviated the suffering. Science is constantly evolving and prolonging the lives of those of ill health whether physically or mentally. My father had epilepsy and not to long ago historically people would have thought he was possessed by demons. Now I believe if one chooses not to seek medical help that is their prerogative. If they want alternative treatment in holistic medicine it is their choice. But I would caution all people to seek medical professional opinion when it comes to their health before making any drastic or fatal decisions. Because it is not a one fit all mentality, because everyone is different. What may work for you doesn't necessarily work for others. My co worker almost died from covid last year because he refused to be immunized. He was put on a ventilator for a few months and now has exorbitant medical bills to pay. I took the shot and only had the mildest of symptoms. We are both 57 yrs old and are exactly the same health wise prior to him almost dying. Is Science perfect, no. But does it save lives, yes, for the most part. Again, this is only my perspective and what I've experienced in my life. I know that I personally would feel a profound shame and guilt if I knowing past along a disease to someone that ended up killing them because I refused to be immunized or practice safe precautions when interacting with others. This poem I feel has a very important message that each individual reader should really consider researching before making life changing decisions that could impact their lives or the lives of others they come across on a daily basis. Thank you for sharing your poem.

Carlos I knew very well that this would be very controversial when I wrote it and posted it. Of course I know that is a not one size fit all issue and yes medications can be very effective in dealing with symptoms as well as limiting the spread of certain diseases but to get a point across first you need to get their attention. Hopefully people will be smart enough to think for themselves and see the flaws in what they read. The main point is that our culture looks to medication as the answer which leaves many with even more problems than they had initially and fills the pockets of many who over medicate and promote false expectations. Thanks again so much for your critical review and taking so much time to express your valued opinion.

I just feel it is encubant on individuals to better educate themselves on issues of health. It really isn't a one size fits all issue, but also it isn't one where an individual falls into the opinions of others. I say this as someone who doesn't medicate when it comes to my mental health issue of depression. The side effects for me were unbearable and I found other alternatives that seem to work for me more than having to go through life feeling numb all the time. When I start to feel manic I write. Now this isn't a solution by no means for everybody or probably even a few, but it has been helpful for me. If I can find a medication that is inexpensive and has no problematic side effects I would consider it. But as of yet only art seems to comfort my anxiety. At least for the time being. Again I caution though this is only my personal experience and years of having to deal with my health issues. If I'm being honest financially I don't have a lot of options which is a reflection of the society we live in today. One which claims to be the richest in history but does very little for its citizens when it comes to health and support. It's shameful how we as a community treat our people in this country as more a commodity than a human life that is suffering and in need. Almost every day now I see a homeless person screaming on a street corner because they suffer from mental health issues. We do nothing for them but fear or revile them not taking into account the pain and anguish they are living with. This is America. Indifferent to those who can't afford to live in its society. The slow erosion of this country has lead us to this point. Where we would rather argue over the health and complexion of each others rights than do anything remotely humane to help resolve these matters. This art is controversial Soren but it is what we need to hear as a society that yearns to be better, but fails to do so. Works like this asks of us important questions and begins meaningful dialogue that we must address, for not doing so we fail in seeking resolution to these problems and we do so at our own peril. Thank you, Carlos you are so right. I agree totally that we do not do enough as a country or individually for those that suffer. I have been a psychologist for over 30 years and have seen the depressed, and mentally distressed and most get so little of what they need. In writing this poem I simply wished to draw attention to the fact that many people rely on medication as a magic answer to their problems. It is not, it is a tool and requires much more to ensure proper health. Does the person get proper nourishment, exercise, sleep, social support, and something to look forward to. Yes many don't have even these basics and so how can we think that a pill alone will fix their problems. It is a case by case issue. I am not above taking a medication if needed, but know in doing so what it will offer me and what costs I have to pay, whether financial, physical or mental. Maybe with some awakening in society things will improve.
