tonight

Tonight, it’s only you and me,
and these four walls, sheltering us from the claws of the world
a world an abyss of misery,
where days are colorless and nights are cold,
and happy endings are no more than stories once told,

Tonight, it’s only you and me,
and with these thousand miles between our hearts,
hearts so afflicted with loneliness,
that they have long fallen apart
scared with wounds so deeply cut.

Tonight, it’s only you and me,
and this pleasure and pain as my lips claim yours,
lips that once smiled life into me,
and whispered promises in my ears,
now bitter-sweet with your pouring tears.

Tonight, it’s only you and me,
and the guilt I feel when I look into your eyes,
eyes that were so innocent and trusting,
that they believed my lies,
and with so much tears, they had to pay the price.

Tonight….how I dreaded this night,
because tonight, it’s only you and me,
and the end,
end of what we once were
end of all that we could have been.
the end of us.

Funny how being alone with them during the halcyon days - the honeymoon period if you will - was bliss but when it ends or in the end days being with them is tortuous and hellish.
Still the same two people in the same space but now the attraction has morphed into repulsion.
