Corona

Corona

A Poem by Anni Pon

Bow down to the King
Upon an exponential steed
The King of Standstill
Brought the world to its knees

Loyal subjects spread the word
Spew it far and wide
A new monarch rises
Spiked wings direct the tide
And the townsfolk drop like flies

We declare invisible war
Rumors infect the drinking water
The Kool-Aid is contaminated
And laughter hides the slaughter

The people covet toilet rolls
As if that will protect them
And their diamond shops
And their precious stocks
Safety in gold Trumps the lives of the old

The new King enforces the rules
We wield cotton shields to protect
From hazardous breath
Touch is banned, punishable by
(un)certain death
Or, at least, solitary confinement

Old habits die hard.

In his castle of isolation,
The royal virus waits, mutates
We weaponize a needle
Too little too late

The three blind mice of the apocalypse:
Deceit, Denial, Dissonance

Corona is still King, and

Ignorance is still bliss

It is inevitable that we as poets observe a subject and the people around it and write about. This virus has rearranged our lives in ways we never would have expected. And those mutations are gathering steam.

Along with it the people connected must be scrutinized for their actions, or lack of it. I'm aware of respirators that didn't work, protective gowns with no holes at the end of the sleeves, and more.

Your poem brings out many valid points and you write them well. It's a pleasure to have read your poem. I'll be reading more, I'm sure. Keep writing. :)

What damage this virus has inflicted. Yes it has been King and run amok, but its days will be numbered with the rollout of vaccines. We have a fairy godmother who will save us, but not before the reaper has claimed many more lives. Good use of metaphor here.

You are welcome.
The very first thing I did when hearing of the coming pandemic, was to read about the Spanish flu and I did with a vengeance! We have repeated every mistake they did back then and then we added some new mistakes on top of those! We (humanity) have not learned a thing and with this new ingredient of alternative reality becoming the collective reality we are ill-suited to deal with fighting the virus properly:( well-said lines here Ann
