The Swimming Giraffe

The Swimming Giraffe

A Poem by solitare
"

I met a very very tall man in a fish themed bar. This is about him. He lives in a different country. But he stole a bit of my heart. And now I only seem to catch parasite fish....

"
I was fishing one evening
in a deep shaded watering hole.
Surprisingly I spotted a giraffe
among the fishes and squid.
Obviously tall and lean,
but not as rusty underwater as I imagined.
Even swimming where he didn't reside
he was graceful, confident and sophisticated.
Half smiling, half analysing,
the unassuming giraffe
quite charmingly saw my bait.
He nibbled a few times,
but inevitably was uncatchable.
Unlike the other sea creatures,
the giraffe could raise his head above the waves
and walk back to his leafy green land
and nibble on the succulent fruit trees.
Later I reflected at the gracious enigma
and how he had mysteriously swam near me.
I pondered and fathomed ...
How he taught me to look deeper,
before raising my head too high.
How he taught me to go with the flow of the current,
rather than push towards the tide.
He taught me even if you dive into darkness,
you can still lift your head into sunshine.
He taught me not to take a big bite,
But that it's better to slowly nibble.
I doubt I'll see that swimming giraffe again,
but in some unexpected moments
I hope to see his half smiling deep brown eyes shining back at me.
