Crazy People Never Go Out Alone

Crazy People Never Go Out Alone

A Stage Play by Doo23
"

Bleu has an argument.

"

Violet: Let’s go over this again.

You have writer’s block because pitying your identity crisis is going nowhere.

Am I right?

(Bleu looks at Violet bitterly)

Violet: Then just give writing up!

(Pause)

Bleu: I didn’t ask for this.

Violet: You did.

Bleu: I didn’t.

Violet: If you didn’t then who’s fault is it? Who was it that made you question everything in your life that wasn’t set in stone? Who was it that made you rethink yourself.

Bleu: You.

Violet: You mean you.

(Pause)

Bleu: English has failed me, confused me, hung me out to dry and never brought me in when I was crisp and white.

Violet: You’re kidding right?

Bleu: About what?

Violet: About not being a writer? (beat.) Look at me when I’m talking to you.

Bleu: (nervous) I’m tired of people staring.

Violet: I can’t hear you…

(Sandy enters SL, crossing the upstage)

Bleu: I said I’m tired of people staring!

(Sandy turns and gives him and odd look as she exits SR. Bleu sinks down in his chair)

Violet: Are you ashamed of me?

Bleu: It’s not that I—

Violet: Are you ashamed of yourself?

Bleu: Violet don’t do this to me—

Violet: What am I doing? Is it wrong for being mad that you’re ashamed of me?

Bleu: Stop please.

Violet: Stop encouraging you to be better?

Bleu: Please people are staring.

Violet: Maybe because you’re practically on the floor. Sit up straight.

(Bleu sits up slightly, not looking at Violet)

Bleu: What if I said I didn’t want you around anymore?

Violet: That’s how you’re going to do things.

I’ll tell you something, you brought me here but it’s out of your hands.

I’ll leave when I please.

(Sandy rushes in SR with a tray, running into Violet’s chair. She barely gets out an apology before she continues on, exiting SL)

Violet: (angry) You’re just gunna let her run into me.

Bleu: She doesn’t see you.

Violet: What, speak up!

Bleu: She can’t see you.

Violet: I am apart of you. (Change in demeanor, urging) Stand up for yourself.

(change again) You’re so weak.

Bleu: (standing in frustration and anger) You make me weak!

(Sandy has entered SL, stopping nervously behind Bleu. She cautiously steps forward)

Sandy: Can I help you sir?

(Bleu sits)

Bleu: Just a coffee for now.

(Sandy starts to exit SL)

Violet: (softly) You’re going to let her ignore me?

Bleu: (beat) Hey… you forgot about my friend.

(Pause)

Sandy: Do you have someone else joining you?

Bleu: She’s (beat) right here.

(Pause. Sandy looks right through Violet.)

Sandy: There’s (beat) no one (pause. She looks at Bleu, unsure)

What can I get you today m’am?

Violet: (surprised) A latte

(Sandy pauses, glancing at Bleu)

Bleu: A latte.

(Sandy nods and exits SL)

Bleu: She was nice.

Violet: She was making fun of you.

Bleu: She’s nice.

Violet: I bet she’s back there talking to her little friends about the crazy guy at table 3.

Bleu: She doesn’t think I’m crazy.

Violet: You really think so? The world isn’t nice Bleu.

Bleu: You’re not going to win Violet.

Violet: The world isn’t nice. That’s why I’m here.

To help you.

(Pause)

Bleu: I don’t need your help anymore.

(Violet sits stunned, standing slowly. She backs away from the table a few steps before turning and walking out. Sandy enters SL with a tray of drinks. She smile at Bleu and puts down his coffee then very decisively turns to Violet’s empty chair, putting a cup onto the table before it.)

Sandy: Here you go, m’am.

Bleu: (serenely) She’s not there anymore.

Sandy: (beat) Really? Where’d she go?

Bleu: I don’t know.

Sandy: Is she coming back?

Bleu: (looks up) You know, I don’t think she is.

(Pause. Sandy points to the empty chair at the table before slipping into it.)

Sandy: What was her name?

Bleu: (beat) Violet.

And I’m Bleu.

(Sandy reaches forward to shake his hand, he takes it.)

Sandy: I’m Sandy

And I’ll be your server today.

I love this. I love that it was so simple and calm, yet showing what for some is hell. It could be put into a full length play, but honestly I love it as a stand alone.
