Irresistible- Chap 5 Wolves

Irresistible- Chap 5 Wolves

A Chapter by snapjack

“Oh my God!” I screamed. Triston threw me up in the air towards a herd of branches. I desperately tried to grasp and hold on, but I only fell back down to the ground.

“What’s wrong with you!” Triston screamed at me while dodging one of the giant wolf’s sharp teeth. They were starting make a circle around us. My knee and arms were bleeding and I could tell by the way that Triston’s face was scrunched that it wasn’t doing him any good.

The wolves were giants compared to an everyday wolf that I had seen in zoos.

“I’m sorry!” I yelled, pulling myself up and trying to climb up a nearby tree. Triston had his back to me and looked like he was ready to pounce. I slipped and tried to kick, but the tree’s bark only made my legs bleed more as I landed hard on my feet.

The wolves had their noses scrunched and hair bristled. They had stopped attacking after Triston threw the last one away from him.

“Be care-” I started, but Triston cut me off.

“Climb the f*****g tree!” Triston snarled at me. The way he said it made me realize that his teeth were elongated and ready to cut flesh. I gripped the tree branch harder and desperately tried to climb.

I looked behind me to see if anything was trying to come near me and, even though it was dark, I saw that in the short distance a black wolf was approaching us. It was much larger from the rest of the wolves, which seemed impossible, and its eyes seemed to glow yellow in the night. I looked around and noticed all of their eyes glowed about the same color.

The black wolf looked calm and less feral than the rest. A stark white wolf looked back at the black wolf, turned to look at Triston and then it backed away from Triston. The other wolves followed suit, but didn’t look away from him.

Triston straightened and watched the black wolf make its way towards him. Triston’s back was completely straight, but nonetheless tense.

“Climb. The tree. Now,” Triston commanded calmly under his breath, just loud enough for me to hear it. I looked back up and tried to reach for a branch. I sucked at climbing. One of the wolves growled nearby me. I whipped around. One of the wolves was snarling and spitting at me.

“That’s enough.” I turned to look at the voice and there stood a naked man that was taller than Triston by, what looked like, six inches. His hair looked black and was rustled on top of his head. His eyes remained a dull glowing yellow, but his body was…glowing too? Tattoos that dotted and circled his torso glowed against the dark forest light and flowed down his arms and legs in a very dull shade of blue.

I stared in disbelief.

The wolf that was growling at me immediately quit. The man locked eyes with me and I blushed so hard that I was sure he could see it. His face was sharp and prominent. Everything about him looked wild and strange. The man turned to look at Triston.

“Why are you on my land, vampire?” The man asked, turning to look at Triston.

“Taking a stroll with my human,” Triston said in a convincing way. The man looked at Triston firmly, clearly not believing a word he said.

“I do believe you are the missing mayor are you not? Duray?” The man asked.

Duray? I thought.

“If you know who I am, then may I ask why there is a building unwillingly filled with mine and your kind alike on, what is possibly, your land?” Triston dared, taking a step towards the man. The wolves began to threaten with the sounds of their growls, but Triston ignored it. I saw something pass over the man’s face, but it was quickly gone and replaced with a raised eyebrow.

“A building? This is as far as my territory goes. I have not seen a building. That land must belong to another.” The man said. The man seemed shocked, but Triston didn’t buy it.

“How do I know that you’re not in on it?” Triston asked. The man stood a little straighter and studied Triston harder.

“If I say that I haven’t seen a building, mayor, then I haven’t seen a building. I own my land as you own yours,” the man said threateningly. The man looked at the wolves and then looked back at Triston. “Though, I had a… pack member return to me not long ago claiming of such a building.” I immediately knew there was something more to that story, but didn’t dare acknowledge it to him. “What happens to these people of mine and yours when they go to the building?”

“They’re being tested on and tortured. It’s run by a unique and I had overheard some of their conversations. Apparently there are hundreds of these types of buildings all over the nation. I’m unsure of what exactly they’re doing with them, but luckily,” Triston turned, looked at me quickly and looked back at the man. “We escaped.”

The man thought for a minute. He also looked unmistakably pissed.

“Where is this building located?” Triston pointed to where we came. “If you follow the scent you’ll find the way. We just escaped. They tried to capture us, but we managed to escape that, too.”

“How big?” The man asked, looking the way that Triston pointed.

“Huge. It’s mostly underground,” Triston replied.

“What will you do on your behalf with all of this information?”

“If you carry my message along to others nearby, I’ll gladly find a way to end this,” Triston said. The man began to smirk while looking back at Triston.

“Gladly,” the man said. His eyes darted to mine. I blushed again and looked away.

“What is your name?” Triston asked.

“Jet Jaci,” Jet answered. His last name came out like “Jay-see”. Triston nodded. “If I had never heard of you, Duray, I would not trust a word out of your vampire mouth.”

“I will contact you soon, Jaci,” Triston said. Jet simply nodded his head and went from standing in human form to a running, black wolf in the matter of two seconds, with his pack following close behind him.

I stared after them and didn’t realize that my mouth was open until Triston closed it with two fingers. My hand hurt when I also realized that I had been gripping a tree branch the entire time. It took me a moment, but I finally had something witty to say.

“And you didn’t get the glowing guy to help us,” I muttered. Triston smiled and shook his head, looking back at them. They were no longer in sight and I couldn’t hear them either.

“They wouldn’t help us even if we were dying of dehydration and they held a bucket of water,” Triston answered.

“Why did he call you Duray and since when have you been a mayor? I think I would have heard about a vampire mayor.”

“Duray is my last name and vampires have our own government as does werewolves and shape-shifters. Angels and demons have their own thing going for them,” Triston said in a calm and normal voice. He looked at my face and actually chuckled in it.

“Let’s go,” Triston said and picked me back up.

“The tattoos mean that he is a leader. They’re signs of protection and strength, or something like that,” Triston said.

I had learned that scientists had yet to figure out why the leaders’ tattoos glow, especially at night and when they’ve been touched by what could be a possible soul mate. Triston said that some of the pack leaders’ tattoos quit glowing on occasion, but they haven’t figured that out either. I had also learned that if a governor or higher importance went missing, the United States would send out a missing person search for both humans and creatures alike, but if a mayor went missing, he or she could easily be replaced. Though, Triston, who I thought was in denial, claimed that it hasn’t been long enough to replace him yet.

“Do the tattoos work?” I asked. Triston snorted, but didn’t reply.

It felt like hours had passed since I had touched the ground. My legs cramped and I desperately needed to change positions, but I was too afraid of what Triston would say if I complained.

After a while, when I was about to open my mouth Triston slowly stopped.

“There’s the road,” Triston said and looked behind us. I tried to look, but it was too dark to see my hand in front of my face. I looked at where the road was and I couldn’t see that either. “And there’s a…” I already heard it. The sound of an engine and headlights slowly approaching.

“Stay here,” Triston whispered and lightly placed me on the ground. I nearly fell over from stiffness. Triston ran straight and I watched as the headlights casted a shadow from behind him and then the car slowed down to a stop.

Triston approached what looked like a truck and without even talking, the driver opened the door and climbed into the back of the truck bed. Triston turned and looked at me, waving me to come. I proceeded cautiously and when I looked, the man looked as if there was nothing crazy about this as he picked dirt from under his nails. He looked about seventy years old.

“Do you know him?” I asked to Triston. Triston shook his head and opened the passenger door for me. “Then how-” I started.

“Get in, Mona,” Triston said, unenthusiastically. I silently climbed into the old truck. Triston got into the driver’s seat and shifted the dusty vehicle into drive. I looked behind us at the old man, who clearly was enjoying himself, and became worried.

“Will he be okay? It’s starting to get a little chilly,” I asked and Triston gave me a side look.

“He’ll be fine,” Triston said, looking back at the road. I looked back to make sure and the old man began to move his hand with the wind.

“What’d you do to him?” I asked.

“Nothing that will cause him harm, but apparently I’ve done it’s done something to you,” Triston mumbled. I glared at him and shifted in my seat. We were quiet for a while until finally Triston spoke.

“If you want to stay out of further trouble, I’d suggest that you follow my league and not say anything unless asked to speak by me,” Triston said, staring ahead and not looking at me.

“What?” I asked.

“I may be for humans coexisting, but most vampires are not. So I strongly advise you to not mess this up for a few days. Lay low as long as possible until I can-” Triston looked at me out of the corner of his eye. “take you home.”

The thought of getting to civilization made me want to jump. I didn’t reveal any emotion from that statement, but I couldn’t help but want Triston to come with me. I inhaled the musky air and looked out at the dark road. I had never seen this place before.

“Why did they kidnap you?” I asked, still looking out of the windows. It took a while for a response.

“I don’t appreciate humans being tortured and used as a major food source,” Triston said. He looked over at me and I didn’t know how to respond. Of course I didn’t agree with it either given the circumstances, but the way that Triston said it made me think there was more to the situation. His hands gripped the steering wheel a little tighter.

We didn’t talk for a long time until I broke the silence.

“I don’t remember them taking me at all,” I muttered. Triston smirked and I looked over at him.

                “What,” I asked.

“You were lucky that you could even stand. On top of the alcohol intoxication that you were suffering, they still drugged you up with something that they’ve made,” Triston said. I looked at him for a minute.

“Who gave it to me?” I twirled my shirt in my fingers. I didn’t remember much of anything from that night except leaning against a large speaker and remembering the bass shaking the thick, green liquid in the glass. My mind touched something, but the more I focused on it the more it went away.

“Probably Mather. He does all of their dirty work,” Triston answered. I didn’t say anything. “He didn’t touch you or anything, at least not that I know of.”

“No, that’s not it. I just can’t remember anything.”

“Well you sort of fell and went to sleep as soon as you got there,” Triston said. An expression crossed his face.

“What?” I asked. He looked over at me and I saw it. It was quick, but he looked almost depressed. His eyes shifted from me to the road and then he jerked back to me except he wasn’t looking at me, but behind me.
