Coming from Behind

Coming from Behind

A Poem by Stefon Napier

He's from Pittsburgh.

Came in fighting the night.

Got lots of steam in the evening he said

So warm you can't even hold coffee and sometimes the steel sweats.

Beers tend to weep but so do the fellas working overtime.

Everything grows sorta slow and gentle.

Above the hardness of it all, the sky is kind.

Better than Green Bay and younger too.

He likes hockey and war veterans.

Says his Dad played in Vietnam but calls him the failure.

There's a silence but the radio keeps talking.

The Red Sox won but not the Padres.

He seems lonely now.

I slid him a hot roll and and he shows his first grin.

Says his wife makes the same kind on Sundays.

I grin and wipe the counter.

We laugh at little victories like that.
