Her Mother's Jewelry Box

Her Mother's Jewelry Box

A Poem by smzang

The hinged lid, gilded with fluted edge,
a red velvet lining remembers traces
of its early flame. The mirror, aged
and wise still does not lie, Her mother's face
is reflected in her smile.

An amethyst, an opal, a few pieces of gold,
solid, old, enduring, A strand of pearls,
demure as if brand new, Three baby bracelets,
the kind hospitals used to give, each with a name
embossed on beads of pink and white.

And so the ancient box reveals
the history of a wife who failed
and no matter all the good she'd done
He worked his farm
without a son.

This is really quite Beautiful. It has a saddened quality to it, as well. The expectations of the husband never being brought to fruition. That being perceived as failure makes this a bit sad. There was no failure, only a lack of seeing a want come to life... Most Excellent poem, and tale.

what a beautiful portrait of a woman that was not appreciated for all the love and
caring she gave because of a defect she had no control over...and wasn't even a
defect, just a chance..three babies & none bringing the approval so needed.
beautiful images of the box that held her beautiful memories and the writer's.
Excellent work! Insightful and strong.

A sweet, sensitive memorium.
Very sad, yet a picture of life...
No matter how we try, some of us never
seem to get it right .

It is very difficult to review a piece that is
very profound.

Beutifull !
