girls from '99

girls from '99

A Poem by sonyaroo

she was strong
and secure:
a man at heart
in a man’s world.
there was something
about her i liked
or disliked
and even though
she was from ninety-nine
she was my mother
she could skip stones
in a puddle
and knew her s**t
when it came to garbage
we always
talked just about her
in my basement
on sunday nights.
and i sat on her lap
as often as i could
she’d give me
a piggy-back ride
i guess i must
admire the innocene
of girls from ninety-nine
