ONLY IF I COULD

ONLY IF I COULD

A Poem by JENY
"

Its about my pet...

"

ONLY IF I COULD..

She prowls

She purrs

She mourns

She never sings

Her movements are majestic

Her gaze deep and sharp

Her sleep shallow and fugacious

Her hunger blind and never kind

My feet is her favorite place

Where she cuddles when she needs love

My pillow is her haven

Which she grabs in rainy Sundays

She knows not what jealousy is

She knows not what hate is

She knows not what vengeance is...

She knows not who God is

When we pray, she sleeps

When we hurry, leisurely she stalks

When we panic, herself she stretches

When we cogitate, with her shadow she plays

Looking at her I heave a sigh..

Only if I could be calm and content

Like my pet, my p***y cat Dolly.!!!

Who kept her divinity intact

With a God like resolution..

After eons of evolution..

To be her self

Whatever be the attitude of civilizations

Towards her species..!!!!

Yes cats are cool. My cat sit with me the whole night when I write. Bring her toys when she wants to play. A very good poem. Cats are tougher then we think. They can transfer to a outdoor cat in a few hours and survive. A outstanding poem.

this is a perfect cat poem...i felt an immediate affinity with it and the feeling continued throughout the entirety of the write...for me...this is a mark of a successful poem...it transcends mere observances...there is obvious reverence to which you do the theme a level of justice that the reader cannot help but be entertained...how many cats have i seen dressed up? DON'T ASK ha ha...it struck a chord and i sense it will do likewise in many readers to come...i will get around to all your requests...i have many and i want to do them all the appropriate justice so if im a little slow please be patient...it is no because im being ignorant :) this is excellent...

This poem really describes what a great pet a cat is and perhaps why we should envy their lives!

I think the strongest element of this poem is the way in which each aspect of the life of the narrators cat is summed up in each short stanza. This poem isn't a long, rambling celebration of feline life but more akin to a series of feline successes. We have a stanza about her grace, a stanza about her love of comfort, a stanza about her blissful lack of knowledge of negative human traits etc. This all combines to make the reader think what a great life it must be as a cat with a caring owner.

Structurally the use of repetition is effectively used in this poem. This can be seen from the first stanza but is perhaps most successful in the fourth stanza where it is almost repeated as a mantra beginning, "she knows not..." when considering all of the aspects of human existence she is not inflicted with. The use of the phrase "she knows not" instead of the more contemporary "she doesn't know" makes each statement seem more spiritual. It has the tone of a hymn rather than conversation and the less traditional phrasing slows the reader and perhaps makes them consider just what life would be like without these human frailties.

I really enjoyed reading this poem. It made me reflect on the time I had a cat and could study her relaxed approach to life and remember all of those times I perhaps felt a little envious!
