MASS PSYCHOTHERAPYA Story by JENYActually it is not a story.... It is an essay..
Stigma regarding mental illness is still deep rooted in less developed countries of east. Indian society is an example for it. Indian society is not so psychic savvy. Incurable nature of mental illness that persisted in olden days and superstitions associated with created many wrong notions which is still rampant even among educated peoples. It is not easy to change the mindset of a society’s concept regarding certain issues. Facts regarding issues that are more or less abstract in nature are very much difficult to convince a group of persons. Tendency to generalize conclusions based on isolated cases which have not adequate scientific proof is very much strong in collective consciousness thanks to collective mind’s appeal for hasty conclusions. If a student undergoes counseling or psychotherapy during his most turbulent adolescent period, he is very soon labeled as personality deviated from normal. This label follows him throughout his life. The antidote to this is awareness. Awareness regarding mental disease, whys and hows of human behavioral patterns is the need of the hour. In underdeveloped nations psychology should be made a subject of learning from the high school level itself. Thereby society should be taught to view mental illness as any other physical ailment. Stigma and ignorance that common people attribute to mental aberrations affects the overall mental health and development of concerned society. As number of people who try to conceal their ailments will be much greater than those who come out to seek for professional assistance in such atmosphere. Similarly, those who are relieved from their ailments will never be accepted and adapted to the society as before as long as stigma regarding the illness is not cured from the minds of mass. © 2010 JENY |
