A Poem by Kathleen Burlas

I wake up from a dream
Oh! more like a nightmare
I get out of bed just to see them go

All my life I've lived this way
A solitary life in vain
I have my parents but never a Mom and Dad

A child like me won't understand
Their business is killing me
They've been held captive by someone called 'work'

It's breaking to see them go
Leaving me alone in this lonely abode
I shed a tear as I wave goodbye

They've got no time to chat
No time to love nor notice me
A dummy of their profession- I consider them

I sleep with a longing in my heart
I want lullabies just like every child
And bedtime stories to hear

But I sleep without them knowing
Their focus is their work
Can't even kiss me goodnight

In the morning I sit at the doorstep
I look up and see the chirping birds
Somehow I've managed to smile

I see people passing by
Tell myself how pitiful I seem
I look at them with a word on my mind..

" If ever you see my Mom and Dad
Will you make them come back home ?!"
