![]() A RerunA Chapter by Jelly Shot![]() Big news takes Harper in shock![]() After school, Bessie and Harper went to the library to do their homework. Bessie noticed every jump Harper made when anything occurred. As soon as they took their seats, Bessie leaned forward and asked, "What's wrong?"
Harper looked up and her nose twitched. "Johnny is what's wrong. I can't believe he's happy." she scowled at the table as she spoke, "I mean, it would be amazing if we were parents together." Harper sighed and stared behind Bessie. "No it wouldn't! He would bail on you the second things go bad. Maybe if it all seems so perfect he would leave then knowing he is not needed." Bessie hissed. Harper turned away, and Bessie automatically felt bad. "I'm sorry Harper, I didn't mean it like that! I just wanted-" "It's okay, it's not you. I just... need some time alone to think about this." Harper stood from the library table and walked out leaving Bessie behind, watching her. Harper didn't exactly know where to go. She just walked up Vincent Avenue and saw Clyde and his buddies near Rite Aid. She looked away then she heard her name in one of their mouths. She stared at the corner of their eye, and they are pointing and talking. Before she turned the corner, howls of laughter boomed into her ears. She then turned on Eve Street near the Brooklyn Park. It took her a minute or two until she finally turned to Walnut Street. She walked along Brooklyn Park watching the little kids play. She saw how the mothers smiled as they saw the cute things their child were doing. Once on got hurt, the mother would instantly run up to them being the hero of the day. Harper caught herself not walking. She moved once more and shook her head. A little girl cried out "Mommy!" and Harper's head turned around and she cried out, "Yes?" She felt foolish when the little girl's mother came and rushed her away. Harper crossed the street and decided to go home after all. There was a knock on Harper's door. Harper stood from her seat and opened the door to find Mrs. Benson with a tray of cookies. "Hi sweetie. I thought you would like some since you're down." Mrs. Benson said in a sweet voice that Bessie would use when she spoke to her. "Thank-you." Harper whispered as she took the tray out of Mrs. Benson's hands. "Would you like some?" she offered as she walked back. "No thank-you I'm on a strict diet." Mrs. Benson announced a bit sad. "I wish I can, but save some for Bessie, okay dear?" Harper nodded. They exchanged smiles and Mrs. Benson walked out. Harper took a cookie and examined it. She sighed and placed it back on the tray and stared out the window. The sun was preparing to set, and Harper's homework is still no complete. She stood and went to her brown and white plaid book bag, and took out her assigned work. She stared at the words and numbers, but couldn't answer or complete one assignment. Then there was another knock on the door and this time Bessie called, "Harper?" "Come in." Harper said still staring down at the homework. Bessie came in with a brown paper bag and a sheepish smile. "Guess what I got?" she said in a sing-a-song tone. After a few seconds of silence Bessie continued, "Another pregnancy test, you know to double check." Then she pulled out three boxes, "Or triple." Harper gaped at the boxes filled with answers that could be true or false. She then stood and grabbed all three boxes and rushed into her bathroom, preparing herself for the worst. "Ready?" Bessie asked in an almost whisper. Harper nodded. Bessie lifted the first stick and said, "It's a positive..." She smiled and grabbed the next one, "Another... positive..." Then she grabbed the next one and her smile faded. She took a deep breath and said, "You're... pregnant." Harper grabbed the last stick and saw it was a positive. She didn't know if she should scream and laugh. It wasn't what she expected, ironically enough, she is expecting. "So when are you gonna tell Johnny?" Bessie asked playing with the paper bag. "Whenever I'm brave enough." Harper whispered. "Or... When it starts to show." © 2010 Jelly Shot |
