As I cried because you joined the ranks
you cried because you had to take a stand
I yelled and screamed and gave no thanks
but you stood and took mine in your hand
"Mom, you said, there are so many wrongs
in this world - not just where we live
I have to try about this I feel strong
I have so much, for my country, to give
you're upset now but one day you'll see
I did what I did because I can
for you and sis and dad to be free
I hope one day soon you'll understand"
I understand son, now what and why
and if I could take back what I said that day
I know you'll go and you will try
you'll follow your heart no matter what we say
Your will is strong, and your heart is true
and you'll make a fine soldier one day
I will miss you and love you too
and I'll be here for you - come what may
A very touching tribute to your son's selfless service. Very well-written with a wonderful flow and rhyming scheme. I suspect no soldier's mother feels any differently than you in her heart. You are sacrificing, too...serving our nation by letting him do what he believes he must, standing behind his decision to answer his personal call to duty, enduring the pain and fear only a soldier's mother knows. I will pray he helps right some wrongs, makes this world a better place because he served, and comes home to Mom a better man--a better son--for having been a soldier.
He will be home soon...If I could fill his shoes for one day I would, just so he could be home with you. They refused me because I was too Old.
Anyway god be with him and all the others.
Our prayers are with them.
a hard thing to go against family for something you truly believe in. He is very brave and I wish him the best of luck and much thanks for taking the stand and fighting for our freedom. Great tribute to a strong man. He knows you love him even if you didn't say it at the time.
bravo! i felt the same. proud, angry, scared, hopeful... my boy (and i) made it through basic training and ait or ati or whatever alphabet soup the army had him swallow. well done, my dear. it's no coincidence you and i met. our feet seem to journey similar paths, even though on different turf. 100 daisies.
Oh Suzi this is really such a wonderful expression of your love for your son... it deeply touches my heart... I'm sure he understands you only said the words out of fear for his safety... Really a compelling write.
Very touching. Its such a hard thing to do, letting go of our children so that they can do what they feel is right. Our children teach us so much it is sometimes unbearable. Good for you.
Oh, Suzi!!! This is BEAUTIFUL! I hope and pray for your son's return too...You wrote this with such love and true emotion...just lovely and also sad :(
EXCELLENT poem!
