The Water

The Water

A Poem by Jen Walters

I sit by the water
Year after year
I stare at my reflection
Sometimes its not so clear
I watch the birds fly overhead
Sometimes I am filled with so much dread
I wish I wasn't so rough around the edges
That I was as smooth as the water's edge
I throw a rock into the water
To watch the ripples appear
They go far and then they go near
Once more the water is smooth and clear.
I wish I was like the water clear
I wish I could teach my heart to hear.
I wish you were near
To tell me that I am dear.

My goodness, I think I have to save this to my favorites. The simple motion of water can teach so much- it can bring out the introspection in all of us. Your second stanza took me by surprise- Many poets often equate flying birds with liberation, but in this poem, something in the flight fills the speaker with "dread." Your last stanza ties everything together nicely. Well done.

Perfect ending to a amazing poem.
"I wish I was like the water clear
I wish I could teach my heart to hear.
I wish you were near
To tell me that I am dear."
The above wish is my wish also. A outstanding poem dear Jen.
