The Night Life

The Night Life

A Poem by Jen Walters

The city lights come on
The day is nearly gone
I walk these streets
With a new step to my beat

The night is for me
Though my reasons surely be
As clear as day if I may say
For night to come my way.

I hear the music of the night
The stars shine oh so bright
The street lamps come on
And the shadows grow so long

The shops are all closed up
The darkened veil is just about up
Most people's eyes are almost shut
The moon has almost risen
The crickets are starting to sing
I wonder what this night will bring.
As I walk underneath its darkened wings.

I hear my footsteps on the concrete
Each one containing one unique beat
I stop at the park to listen for awhile
I sit on a bench and begin to smile.
I sit here until the dawn
And watch the daytime lights come on.
