Blackbird, or, The Path of Least ResistanceA Poem by Lindsay LukensAnother mildly existential poem. I walked in the rain one day, alone, and to my left a blackbird flew against the wind. She was standing still...
Once –
in the rain –
contemplatively did I wander
laughing at the ironic sky
My lover
declining
waits in the fortress ahead -
and I
having exhausted my wait
thank the raindrops for rinsing Desire’s
trace from my skin
I feel I am standing still
These things
concrete
paved streets
stand drenched
in the rain around me
To my left
a blackbird flies against the wind
It seems she is standing still
Once again and again
I hear her shining wings
beat the sky
And yet
she is standing still
The rain beads my skin
and I exhale
as she turns with the wind and flies easily away
motionless wings soaring over the pavement
as I look towards my lover
and smile
