This Year, Steady as I am

This Year, Steady as I am

A Poem by Skylar Lighten
"

New year, Same me. Just like how I want it

"

New year is always a big deal,
But this time, I’ve decided it won’t be.
No fireworks of pressure, no loud resolutions.
Just me, and the quiet celebration of being.

I’m okay where I am-
No frantic search for a “new me,”
No chasing change because the calendar flipped.
I’m not defined by numbers,
By the arbitrary tick of time.

I love who I am.
Every scar, every strength, every misstep that taught me to stand tall.
I don’t need a countdown to remind me
Of the rhythm of my growth-
It’s already in motion, steady and sure.

I already know who I want to become.
Not a fleeting version shaped by trends,
But a truth I’ve carried in my chest for years.
I’m carving her out daily,
Piece by piece, step by step, with hands steady and deliberate.

The world says, "New year, new you!"
But why change what’s already beautiful?
Why erase the work I’ve done,
The lessons I’ve learned,
The roots I’ve planted,
The dreams already sprouting?

I don’t need a date to define me,
Or a promise spoken under midnight skies.
My journey is mine - messy, magical, ongoing.
And this year, like every other,
I will walk forward, not because I must,
But because I want to.

Here’s to the soft rebellion of staying true.
Here’s to the quiet revolution of loving yourself as you are.
Here’s to this year -
Not as a fresh start, but as a continued story.
Mine to tell, mine to live.
