Time

Time

A Poem by Skylar Lighten

I stare at the sky,
Pressuring the sun to go to bed,
Demanding the moon take its place instead.
I watch the clouds as they float and glide,
Wishing we could fast-forward the tide.

I wish the calendar could speed by faster,
Flip its pages, erase the disaster.
Leave today behind,
And find a fresh state of mind.

So I’ll close my eyes,
And count to ten.
Hoping that when I open them,
Tomorrow will begin.

And then I’ll do the same, over again,
'Til life slips by in front of my eyes, unnoticed, unclaimed-
Like all the opportunities missed on that train.

I stare at the clocks ticking by,
Each second a whisper, each minute a sigh.
Who is Time?
And why does he control my life?

Does he laugh when I beg for more?
Does he mock as I stare at the door?
Locked out of the moments I long to embrace,
Watching my future disappear into space.

But Time... he’s a thief, and I know his game.
He won’t stop, won’t falter, won’t carry the blame.
So maybe it’s me who must take the reins,
To catch that train,
To rewrite the refrain.
