When the World finds Me

When the World finds Me

A Poem by Skylar Lighten
"

Exploring the transformative journey of travel, where each new landscape offers a fresh understanding of self.

"

I’m a stranger in the mirror, piecing myself together
from glimpses, from places I've never known.
Every road I take steals a piece and leaves a trace:
sand worn into my bones, cities mapped on my skin.

I walk on, through open fields and crowded streets,
and the world catches hold like a quiet insistence"
grasses bending toward the sun, waves pulled by the moon.
Everywhere I go, it’s the land that finds me.

I let the hills know my weight, let rivers run through my pulse.
In forests, my voice comes back softer, shadows gather in new shapes.
Every mountain I climb shows me something I never thought to see.
Every sky darkens to starlight, showing me the edges of who I could be.

In each place, the air reshapes, says, here’s who you are now,
and I slip into it, trying the fit, feeling the shift.
When I leave, I leave different.
When I return, I return changed.

The world wears me, and I wear it,
taking a piece of every sunset, every dawn.
I learn who I am in these borrowed places,
a story told in winding trails, in skies that open and fall away.
